Water-based primers and overprint varnishes
The UniCoat range covers water-based primers and overprint varnishes with low VOC and low polluting properties, fast drying for in-line wet trapping, and recyclability, biodegradability and repulpability at end of life.
They are low in odour, non-flammable and non-toxic, dry with the clarity of water, show no age-related yellowing, and are available in a range of finishes from high gloss through satin to matt. Significant rub, mar and blocking resistance is achieved without solvent, and the coatings are compatible with all but a very few ink types.

White paper
Technical background: making paper compete with plastic
Paper is renewable, recyclable and accepted by consumers, but on its own it is porous: it lets grease through, absorbs water and offers no resistance to oxygen or water vapour. For a century the answer has been a polyethylene extrusion layer, which makes the pack a composite that most paper mills reject.
Water-based barrier coatings applied on the printing or coating machine can give paper grease, water and moisture-vapour barrier while keeping it repulpable. Grease and oil barrier is measured by kit rating to TAPPI T559, typically requiring a rating of 8–12 for bakery, fast food and pet food.
A coating that prevents the pack from breaking down in the pulper, or that forms tacky residues on paper-machine surfaces, excludes it from the paper stream regardless of ink. Dispersion barrier coatings are tested by pulping under mill conditions and measuring fibre yield, residual coating particle size and stickies potential. Our barrier-coating development is qualified against these protocols from the outset.
