Water is a shared resource
With water becoming an increasingly scarce resource, restrictions on its use and on the quality of water discharged will become more and more common. Our commitment to clean water is an everyday affair, fully built into how we operate.
We monitor water intake routinely and continue to increase the share of recycled water in our processes. Our production site works to a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle discipline, with specific measures at each step of manufacture and cleaning.
Water in a water-based ink
A water-based ink carries water as its solvent, and the wash-up water from a water-based press is the largest single water stream in flexo printing. Formulating for resolubility matters here: an ink that redissolves cleanly on the anilox and plate needs less wash water and less chemical to clean.
Our water-based ranges are built on a blend of alkali-soluble acrylic resin, which gives that resolubility, and acrylic emulsion polymer, which gives water resistance once the amine has left the film. The balance is set per grade so that the printer gets the resistance the job needs without paying for it in wash-up.
Discharge quality
Water leaving a printing-ink plant carries pigment, resin and cleaning agents. Our raw-material selection under the EuPIA Charter excludes heavy-metal pigments and named hazardous solvents, which keeps the most damaging substances out of the effluent in the first place.
