Where we take action

Tackling our footprint on climate

We aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our own operations and, just as importantly, from the product itself. Raw materials are 50–60 % of a UV ink’s cradle-to-gate footprint, which makes raw-material choice the largest single lever an ink maker controls.

Our approach has three parts: switch to renewable and low-carbon energy on site, improve energy efficiency continuously, and reformulate the product so that the carbon arrives lower in the first place.

Product carbon footprint

Brand owners increasingly ask for the carbon footprint of the ink on their pack. We have introduced cradle-to-gate product carbon footprint data for the UV flexo range, calculated to ISO 14067 principles and declared per series.

The largest reduction lever is the acrylate oligomer backbone. Our bio-based UV programme replaces petro-acrylate with renewable feedstocks — itaconic, succinic and fatty-acid-derived acrylates and bio-based polyols — verified by radiocarbon analysis to ASTM D6866. The target is at least 40 % bio-based carbon by 2028 with no loss of cure speed, colour strength or resistance, and at least a 25 % cradle-to-gate CO₂e reduction against the current series.

Energy at the point of cure

Curing energy is the part of the footprint that sits on the customer’s press. LED-UV arrays cure instantly at a fraction of the electricity of a medium-pressure mercury lamp, contain no mercury, produce no ozone and put almost no heat into the substrate.

Our LED and hybrid grades are formulated so that converters can make that switch without losing cure speed or surface finish. Our water-based LED-curable hybrid programme goes further, removing acrylate monomer from the pressroom while still curing at LED energy.
