UV Coatings for Plastic

Adhesion on heat-sensitive, low-energy, solvent-sensitive substrates without distorting the part.

Overview

Adhesion on a difficult surface

Plastic is used in almost every industry, from aerospace and 3D printing to electronics and product packaging. Many of those applications want what a coating provides — wear protection, insulation, chemical resistance and improved performance — but plastic presents three obstacles to adhesion: heat sensitivity, low surface energy and solvent sensitivity.

UV cure answers the first, because almost no heat enters the part under an LED array. Surface energy is answered by treatment and by binder selection. Solvent sensitivity is answered by removing the solvent: a 100 % solids UV coating contains none.
