UniCure FP — Low Migration Inks

Low-migration UV flexo inks for food packaging, built on cross-linkable polymeric photoinitiators from the EuPIA Group 1A and 1B lists.

Overview

Low migration is not less migration

A less-migration ink keeps conventional chemistry and chooses heavier molecules; they migrate more slowly, but they still migrate. A low-migration ink uses photoinitiators that are themselves polymeric or carry acrylate groups, so that during cure they react into the polymer network and become part of the film.

UniCure FP is built on this second principle: cross-linkable polymeric photoinitiators from Groups 1A and 1B of the EuPIA suitability list, no low-molecular-weight acrylates, no Fanal pigments, no mineral oils.

Printed aluminium dairy lidding foil, sealed PET yoghurt cups and folding cartons on a white laboratory bench, one foil lid held up in gloved hands.

How a cured ink can still migrate

Three routes exist. Permeation through the substrate: relevant on plastics and thin paper, negligible on foil. Set-off: the printed outer surface touches the inner, food-contact surface of the next sheet or the next lap of the reel, transferring residues directly. This is the dominant route for paper and board, and one that a barrier substrate does not stop. Gas-phase transfer of volatile components through the headspace.

What migrates is whatever is small, mobile and unreacted: residual monomers, photoinitiator molecules that were never activated, and photoinitiator fragments produced during cure. Benzophenone, ITX and their photolysis products are the historical offenders.

Chemistry alone does not make a compliant pack. Full cure at the specified dose, correct ink load, a suitable substrate and a validated set-off situation are all required.

Independent qualification

We have completed independent migration testing of the low-migration LED flexo system on two of the most demanding food-packaging formats: aluminium and PET lidding for yoghurt and dessert cups, and in-mould labels fused into PP containers.

Testing by an accredited laboratory to Regulation (EU) 10/2011 protocols, using the fatty-dairy simulant, returned overall migration below 1 mg/dm² and specific migration of photoinitiators and acrylates below 10 µg/kg at the recommended ink load and cure.
