Water-based grease, water and moisture-vapour barrier that keeps paper repulpable.
Overview
Paper is renewable, recyclable and accepted by consumers, but on its own it is porous: it lets grease through, absorbs water and offers no resistance to oxygen or water vapour. For a century the answer has been a polyethylene extrusion layer, which makes the pack a composite that most paper mills reject.
Water-based barrier coatings applied on the printing or coating machine can give paper grease, water and moisture-vapour barrier while keeping it repulpable. A coating that prevents the pack breaking down in the pulper, or that forms tacky residues on paper-machine surfaces, excludes it from the paper stream regardless of ink. Our barrier development is qualified against the Cepi recyclability test method from the outset.
Kit rating of 8–12 to TAPPI T559 for bakery, fast food and pet food, with no stain in the 24-hour ASTM F119 test.
Cobb value reduction for produce, frozen and chilled packaging.
Reduced water-vapour transmission for dry goods and confectionery.
Qualified by pulping under mill conditions, measuring fibre yield, residual particle size and stickies potential.
Barrier plus seal in a single coated layer where the format allows.
