Overview
Closing the gap with solvent
Paper gravure — gift wrap, paper bags, wallpaper, decor laminates for furniture and flooring, confectionery wraps — was the first gravure segment to go water-based, and it remains the segment where water-based inks deliver the best combination of speed, quality and cost. Paper gravure runs at 200 to 400 m/min on absorbent substrates, and the water carrier is absorbed as well as evaporated, so drying is faster on paper than on film.
On film the four barriers are drying, wetting, resolubility and lamination bond. We answer them with 40–50 % solids against 25–35 % for solvent, cells engraved 15–25 % shallower, high-velocity impingement drying at 70–90 °C, and surfactant and co-solvent packages that bring surface tension from 72 down to about 30 mN/m.

White paper
De-inkability on paper
Water-based acrylic inks de-ink well when the binder redissolves in the pulper and releases pigment at a floatable size of 10–100 µm, which is the case for the UniLux range on standard papers. The INGEDE Method 11 test and the EPRC De-inkability Scorecard measure luminosity, colour shade, dirt specks, filtrate darkening and ink elimination.
